Ethical Questions in Special Education: Discourse Arena Hearing Disability
2008, 110-122
Summary: At the beginning of the 21st century, ethical questions in special education are more imperative than ever. In this article, some of the most important questions are examined more closely against the background of "hearing disabilities", without disregarding, that the basic ethical dimensions are indispensable for all disabilities, disadvantages and discriminations. Instancing an American lesbian couple, that made a point to search for a deaf sperm donor in order to give birth to a deaf child, the author analyses what prenatal manipulations mean for the individuality and identity of a human being and how cultural classification modes (sign language community, hearing community) can influence the individual autonomy of decision. The article concludes with a short discussion of the Newborn Hearing Screening from an ethical point of view.
