Summary: Open education as a part of progressive education and its constructivist theory of learning undervalue the educational potentials of direct instruction. Such a disregard cannot be justified theoretically, it is not supported empirically and contradicts common sense and practical experience in special education. Direct instruction can be done and has proved to be effective. Therefore, it should not be neglected by ignorance but be respected in research and practice.
