Rahmenbedingungen zur Fortsetzung einer Schwangerschaft in Erwartung eines Kindes mit Down-Syndrom

2006, 40-50

Summary: Due to the developments in prenatal diagnosis more and more foetuses with Trisomy 21 are identified. In this case, almost all women decide to terminate the pregnancy. This may support the general opinion that all birth anomalies were preventable, and therefore, parents of such children were to blame for the births of their child because they did not undergo prenatal testing and selective termination, or even carried an affected foetus to term. In order to find out which factors promote a decision for the child, ten parents and couples of parents, who had decided in favour of a child with Down syndrome despite a positive prenatal diagnosis, have been interviewed. Religious and ethical motives as well as the reflection on this topic prior to the pregnancy turned out to be of crucial importance.

Keywords: Down syndrome, parents, prenatal diagnosis, selective termination of pregnancy
