Summary: In the process of establishing new forms of living, more and more staff members complain about the growing problems with alcohol (ab-)use of mentally retarded individuals. But up to now, there is no reliable proof for this complaint. This empirical study supplies evidence that alcohol problems of individuals with a mental handicap cannot be simply attributed to (open) forms of living, but that they rather have to be considered as a relatively constant universal phenomenon, which has to be taken seriously.
