Summary: For a long time researchers as well as practitioners have ignored the reality of intellectually deficient parents in our societies. While some countries have achieved great progress in the understanding of those parents, the situation in Switzerland remains unsatisfactory, in particular where the basic data and the development of services adapted to their needs are concerned. This study presents various aspects of 29 intellectually deficient mothers’ living conditions. The observations highlight the important interindividual variability and the complexity of influences that structure those mothers’ lives.
