School Integration of Pupils with Hearing Impairments
2005, 28-36
Summary: Nowadays the schooling of pupils with hearing impairments in ordinary classes is an equal alternative to the schooling in special schools and classes. It is mostly a matter of individual integration, i. e. one particular pupil with a hearing impairment is integrated within a regular class. For a long time, the integrated schooling of this group of pupils has been very controversial, but lately opponents and advocates are ready for a differentiated discussion. – This article presents a number of partial outcomes of a research project. It shows the results of the qualitative interviews with the „actors“ (special teachers, regular teachers, hearing impaired pupils, class-mates) at the ordinary school, but also after a change from an ordinary school to a special institution for children with hearing impairments. These partial outcomes represent the answers of the two groups of teachers with regard to the pupils with hearing impairments, the classmates, their own situation (as a teacher) and the environment under the circumstances of individual integration.
