Zur Frage der Verhaltensauffälligkeiten bei Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Körperbehinderungen
Behaviour Disorders in Children and Adolescents with a Physical Disability

2004, 291-303

Summary: Physical impairments do not necessarily lead to psychic deficiencies. Simplistic somato-psychic equitation or compensation models are not valid. Even differentiating psycho-individual or interactional approaches do not empirically result in outcomes, which can be generalised. They only agree on the observation of a significant interindividual variation. At the most, specific risks may express themselves in more frequent inactivity, depressive behaviour, increased sensitivity and unbalanced impulse-control. But usually the common characteristics prevail over the differences between handicapped and non-handicapped persons. Thus it seems to be right to do empirical research on individual risks and protective factors as well as on the forms of coping with physical deficiencies. Such research reveals that a physical impairment does not only lead to a social stigma and subsequent depressive reactions but that it can also be considered as a dynamic chance that may incite coping mechanisms. As a result a good number of disabled children and teenagers develop a surprisingly positive self-esteem and self-reliance.
