Our Paths Evolve from Walking – Approaches of Young Male Students to Study Courses in Special Education
2007, 35-45
Summary: The proportions of male and female students in special education study courses have taken a dramatic devolution. As the number of boys with learning and behaviour disorders is increasing, the number of male special educators is decreasing. This is the background of a research project at the University of Dortmund, which analyses the motives of young men to choose a program of studies in special education and/or rehabilitation sciences. The path to this course of studies is often quite circuitous, it is characterised by a number of impulses and antagonisms resulting from different spheres and phases of life. Based on the outcomes of 40 qualitative interviews, the authors debate the possibilities to increase the number of male students in special educational courses of studies by means of specific measures of education policy.
