Summary: Research can look back on manifold progresses in interrogating persons with a mental or a multiple handicap. The present research outcomes are contrary to evaluations, which impute a generally low level of faculties of comprehension to this group of individuals. Meanwhile, a number of empirical research results are at hand which document the acquisition of differentiated self-statements and self-concepts of this person subgroup. For this group of people, the methods of choice are qualitative approaches, above all problem-centred interviews and the collection of self-statements in groupdiscussions. By an intensive approach to the everyday life of the handicapped persons, such methods allow to systematically minimise the artefacts, generated in many kinds of research settings.
Keywords: Collection of self-statement data, problem-centred interview, group discussion
