Students’ Satisfaction with School: An Empirical Study in Two Grammar Schools

2007, 15-29

Summary: In analogy to job and study satisfaction, school satisfaction was conceptualized as students’ attitudes towards their schools. A questionnaire was developed in order to measure both students’ global school satisfaction and perceived specific characteristics of their schools. The questionnaire was applied to 292 students of two grammar schools (grades 8, 10, and 12). A factor analysis led to six main factors besides global school satisfaction: staff competence, general conditions, specific problems, student representation, school and class community, and appreciation of social involvement. These factors were used as predictors of school satisfaction in a multiple regression analysis. They explained a significant amount of variance beyond the variables school, grade, and sex. The results revealed that staff competence and specific problems were significant predictors of school satisfaction. Consequences for quality management in schools are derived.

Keywords: School satisfaction, student attitudes, school psychology, quality management in schools
