Summary: Despite the close political cooperation between Germany and France over the past decades, the reciprocal perception in the field of education and above all special education is rather undeveloped. Based on the present discussion on the situation of disabled people in the French society, the author describes the traditional structure of special educational assistance and promotion in France and delineates the debate on the reform of this system up to our days. An analysis of the new Act on the state of disabled people in France (2005) gives reason to discuss the perspectives of a new disability policy with regard to the international developments.
