Psychology in Teacher Education: Experienced Teachers Judge the Relevance of Psychological Topics
2006, 226-231
Summary: In a questionnaire survey, 233 experienced school teachers judged the relevance of psychological topics for the education of teachers. The collection of topics was based on a curricular framework suggested by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie (German Psychological Association). Results indicated that the relevance of psychological knowledge in teaching varied for different topics. More action-oriented content areas such as “Intervention and Counseling” were preferred over seemingly theory-guided contents such as “Basics of Developmental Psychology”. Psychological topics concerning the school as an organization were also considered less relevant. Furthermore, there were judgmental differences dependent on the type of school participants worked at and their work experience.
