Summary: On the occasion of the European year for people with disabilities 2003, the European Commission made an attempt to make up a balance of the current situation of people with disabilities in the European Union on a statistical-empirical level. On the basis of the two central studies Disability and social participation in Europe (European Commission/Eurostat 2001) and Definition of disability in Europe: a comparative analysis (European Commission 2002) the author traces the state of discussion and research concerning comparative data on people with disabilities in Europe. She analyses the current and the required data on disabled women and men in European countries with regard to the implementation of gender mainstreaming principles. She comes to the conclusion that due to the unequal socio-political regulations and definitions of disability it is not (yet) possible to compare the specific data of the different European countries.
