Früherkennung von Entwicklungs- und Verhaltensauffälligkeiten im Vorschulalter
Preschool Screening for Developmental and Behavioral Problems

2005, 158-167

Summary: To gain an early diagnosis of developmental and behavioral problems, 221 children attending their final year of preschool were assessed by their teachers with a preschool screening test, the Dortmunder Entwicklungsscreening für den Kindergarten (DESK 3 – 6; Tröster, Flender, & Reineke, 2004) and a questionnaire assessing behavior problems and social skills in preschoolers, the Verhaltensbeurteilungsbogen für Vorschulkinder (VBV 3 – 6; Döpfner, Berner, Fleischmann, & Schmidt, 1993). Results showed that the majority of those children diagnosed as having developmental problems in the subsequent school entrance examination (school-related problems, motor problems, language disorders) already had problem scores in DESK 3 – 6. In contrast, many of those picked out in the screening revealed no problems in their school entrance examination. Compared with the early diagnosis of developmental problems, behavioral problems diagnosed in the school entrance examination were not predicted in preschool screening. It is concluded that developmental and behavioral problems are frequently not detected in the school entrance examination. In contrast, at-risk children could be diagnosed at an early stage by asking preschool teachers to carry out systematic observations with the help of standardized screening procedures.
