Attachment Theory as a Guiding Concept in the Early Education and Therapy of Delayed and Handicapped Children

Summary: Handicapped and developmentally delayed children and their families experience many risks for attachment development. An important goal of any early intervention is to support attachment security, and in this way to strengthen an important protective factor. Both attachment theory and related research methods give concrete suggestions. In the paper instructions for the integration into everydays therapeutical and counceling work were desribed and discussed for each step in the time course of early intervention: diagnosis, therapy, and parents counceling.
