Early Hearing Disability: A Risk for Attachment?
2005, 88-93
Summary: From several reasons – e. g. adaptation processes in parents, regulation of interaction – it seems plausible that the development of attachment in children with hearing disabilities is at risk. Empirical studies, on the other hand, do not show significant differences in attachment in hearing disabled children as compared to normal hearing children. Considering the reasons for this result it seems that an early, to the familiy and the ecological context oriented intervention is the best prevention in attachment development. The most crucial factor in the development of hearing disabled children in general – and more important and critical than attachment – seems to be the quality of symbolic communication between parents and children.
