Summary: A project (2001–2004) scrutinizes the mathematical knowledge of pupils in grade 5 and 8 whose mathematical score is below average. The results indicate that pupils with competencies below average have significantly less understanding of the basic mathematical topics like counting, baseten- system, and basic operation in comparison to a control group. The article gives an overview of some main results and it highlights the topics „use of strategies“, „counting“, „base-ten-system“ and „meaning for the operations” more precisely. Finally, some implications for diagnostics and instruction will be shown.
