Summary: The paper presents the results of an empirical study in the public use of the concept of disability. It shows how – compared to other differentiations – an autonomous difference between disabled/ non disabled gets established through the use of the concept. Two techniques are central to this: Disability means either a process or a quality. Its use always refers to the experience that something unexpectedly does not work. The reconstruction of the use of the concept reveals the nucleus of a theory of disability that does not define but observe the construction of disabilities.
