Jenseits von Mozart - eine Pilotstudie zu Determinanten musikalischer Aktivitäten während der Grundschulzeit
Beyond Mozart - Determinants of Musical Activities in Elementary School Students

2009, 224-238

Summary: Why do some elementary school children learn to play a musical instrument whereas others do not? According to results of studies with older children, the perceived musical activity of parents and friends, as well as artistic interest and musical self-concept, are potential predictors of cultural activities. Variance explained by these variables in the musical activity of N=166 elementary school children is explored. Results from structural equation modeling show that the predictors explain 58 percent of the variance in musical activity. Musical self-concept as well as perceived musical affinity of friends but not musical affinity of parents or musical interest, have unique predictive power with respect to musical activity. Reasons for these findings are discussed.

Keywords: Music education, self-concept, interests, social influences, choice behaviour
