Early Communicative Development in Children with Down syndrome: Interindividual Variability of Play and Language Competence and Parental Experience in Teaching Gestures

Summary: Many young children with Down syndrome show specific delays in expressive language skills. Early teaching of gestures as an alternative method for communication is recommended. We report briefly on the developmental profiles of ten children based on videotaped play observations and on the results of a survey collecting the experience of 24 parents concerning teaching gestures. These results reveal individual variations in the need for professional support to promote the generalized use of gestures.
