Was klingt intelligenter - Waltraud oder Matthias? Zeitliche Stabilität von Intelligenz-Wortnormen für Vornamen im Deutschen und ihre Geltung für Lehramtsstudierende
What Sounds More Intelligent - Waltraud or Matthias? Temporal Stability of Intelligence-Related Word-Norms for Prenames in Germany and Their Generalizability to Prospective Teachers

2009, 150-157

Summary: As studies on essay-assessment show, mentioning a first name triggers specific associations, which may distort results of studies, e.g. regarding gender effects on person perception. These distortions should be controlled for using word norms. For Rudolph and Spörrle’s (1999) norms, temporal stabilitiy as well generalizability regarding prospective teachers were examined via comparison with data of Rudolph et al. (2007) and with data collected for the present study (N=102 prospective teachers). In spite of considerable differences in mean levels, relative position of names was highly stable. For further research, pairs of prenames for both genders are suggested that are associated with similar intelligence. Reasons for the detected mean differences are discussed.

Keywords: Expectations, names, intelligence, social perception, stereotyped attitudes
