Childhood Experiences, Pubertal Timing, and Reproductive Strategies of Adolescent Girls - A Prospective Longitudinal Study

Summary: In the present 14-year prospective longitudinal study, empirical evidence of major tenets of the evolutionary theory of socialization of Belsky, Steinberg and Draper (1991 a) was -investigated in a sample of 23 girls, who had been followed from early childhood to late adolescence. Consistent with the theory, pubertal timing was predicted by parental marital stress and by the quality of the girls’ relation to their mothers. As expected from theory, pubertal timing was significantly correlated with age of first intercourse. The results are discussed in relation to findings from other recent research.
