Psychosomatic Complaints and PsychologicalWell-Being among High-School Students
2007, 223-235
Summary: Adolescents seem to be quite healthy. As a consequence, people often tend to overlook potential health risks during this period of life. Considering the psychosomatic component of health, research provides evidence that youth is not completely free of psychophysical problems. Along the same lines, the results of this cross-sectional study with 1183 Swiss students show that particularly feelings of exhaustion are quite common. Generally, girls report more problems in nearly all subscales. The findings further illustrate that all complaint dimensions are intimately related. Thus, psychosomatic complaints are best represented by a general index, which is significantly correlated with psychological health. More specifically, psychosomatic problems coincide with a reduced psychological well-being among both boys and girls. However, the relationship is stronger among female adolescents. Founding on the studys findings, practical implications are discussed.
