Teachers and Students Idea of Teachers: An Empirical Study to Compare the Idea of the Ideal and Typical Teacher

Summary: The study at hand compares the attitude of teachers and students towards the ideal and the typical teacher. In a 2 x 2-design data of the different aspects of attitude were ascertained. Therefore we developed a questionnaire composed of three parts: a) a semantic differential, b) questions about critical teaching situations, and c) an item ranking. The results show a high congruity between the groups in regard to the idea of the ideal teacher. However, there is disagreement about the typical teacher. The polled teachers gauge a much less difference between the ideal und the typical teacher compared to the students.
