Lehrfilme im Grundschulunterricht: Vergleich von drei Unterrichtsmethoden
Educational Films in the Classroom: A Comparison of Three InstructionalMethods
2007, 191-207
Summary: In the present study, children’s knowledge acquisition through an educational film was examined and this film was compared with two other teaching methods. Participants were 130 8- and 10-year-old children. A pretest-posttest-followup design was utilized to analyse short-term and long-term knowledge gains. Prior knowledge was tested with open-ended questions. Ten days later, children either watched a film, received a standard instruction from a teacher, or participated in a live experiment. One week later and again after 7 months, knowledge was examined using a free recall, open-ended questions and a recognition test. Results concerning the open-ended questioning revealed higher prior knowledge and larger knowledge gains of the older compared to the younger children. While the participants in the live experiment condition showed better performance in the test after one week, the followup-test revealed comparable performance in all conditions. Results are discussed in terms of potential and limitations of educational films in the classroom.
