Der Rechenschwäche auf der Spur – eine Re-Analyse von Mathematik-Leistungsdaten eines kompletten Schülerjahrgangs der achten Klassenstufe in Rheinland-Pfalz
On Trail with Arithmetic Disorder – a Reanalysis ofMathematical Achievement of all 8th Graders in Rhineland-Palatinate
2007, 177-190
Summary: The purpose of these reanalyses of the MARKUS-study (Helmke & Jäger, 2002) is to explore frequencies, appearance and performance of children with dyscalculia in higher school classes. Based on data of all 8th graders in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, the group of the low performing students (dyscalculia) was defined by the following criteria: Performance in the curriculum-based mathematical test below a percent range of 3 % as well as at least satisfactory grades (grade 3 – „satisfactory“ – or better according to German grading system) in other subjects (German and first foreign language). The group of students with such results (1% of population) has a proportion of girls which is above average and consists of students of all types of school. Students with dyscalculia performed poorly in all tasks of the TIMSS-orientated test, independently of the complexity or type of task. Furthermore, students with dyscalculia seem to make more, but not different mistakes. These results indicate misconceptions that are developed systematically by the students and which will be discussed here.
