Quality in Backup Childcare: A List of Quality Standards for the Pedagogical Practice

Summary: The goal of this study was to develop a series of quality standards for Backup childcare. Therefore 14 interviews were conducted with pedagogical experts from Backup childcare institutions. In this context Backup childcare was defined as an emergency care if the regular childcare was not available. The experts had to describe the pedagogical work at its best relating to seven quality areas. The experts’ statements were then transformed into quality standards which were subdivided again into different quality areas. The suitability of the individual standards was evaluated based on developmental psychological findings and quality standards for the regular childcare. As a result a revised list of standards for Backup childcare, containing 90 standards and 155 possibilities of realization was developed. The list focusing the perspective of the child covers measures of process and structure quality.
