Early Diagnosis and Prevention of Learning Disabilities

Summary: Due to important socio-political and -economical changes the health risks of children and the resulting disturbances in development are increasing. An improved early diagnosis of noticeable problems in development and learning disabilities at school is essential to maintain the mental health of children and is considered to be a most urgent task in health care. The roots of learning disabilities can often be found in the preschool age. However, learning disabilities are often diagnosed too late, namely at school when the learning disability is already manifest. The early determination of children threatened with developmental disturbances at preschool age, but at the latest when they start school, is a decisive condition for preventing learning and performance disabilities later on at primary/elementary school.
