Family Stress in Preschool Children With Language Disorders

Summary: The impact of language disorders on family stress was assessed in two groups of parents of preschool children. 43 % reported an elevated level of parenting stress (using the “Parenting Stess Index-Short Form”), specifically in the scales measuring parent-child interaction and child temperament. The “Impact-on-Family-Scale” revealed personal stress concerning further child development in more than 50 % per cent. In a second study, 20 % among 57 parents reported that their children experience social exclusion in their peer group. The results support the recommendation to address the impact on families and coping with behaviour problems in counselling parents of young children with language disorders.
