2010, 62-72
Summary: The purpose of the study is to examine the stress reported by mothers of young children with (severe) intellectual disabilities using the "Parenting Stress Index - Short Form". More than 65 per cent reported a very high level of overall stress and stress in daily parent-child interactions. Nearly 50 per cent reported a high level of emotional distress. Stress varied with the children’s temperament and atypical behaviors, mothers’ perceived self-efficacy and satisfaction with family functioning and social support. Families with young severely handicapped children are a high risk group who are in strong need for respite care and relationship- and family-oriented early intervention services.
